Lyrics

Man From Louisiana

A man came down the road from Louisiana,
Said ‘Watch me wash from the blood from off my hands…
‘You think they’ll put my picture in the paper?’
I shook my head, I closed my eyes, I breathed, and…

She said, ‘I don’t believe you had the nerve to ask me.
‘Is that the kind of girl you think I am?’
I hoped she couldn’t see me in the shadows,
As I stood there with my heart inside my hands…

And sometimes in my dreams is where you’ll find me,
And sometimes walking out along a wire,
My hopes and aspirations fall beneath me,
And the man from Louisiana says it’s fine.
Says it’s fine…

There’s guilt down here, it’s running through my fingers,
Playing games like Catch Me If You Can,
The man he stands, he smiles, he turns to face me,
And I see right through the fingers of my hand.

Obeah comes to haunt me like a shadow,
And Papa Doc is always in my thoughts,
He says the blood is cleansing like a river,
And the only sin is if you’re ever caught.

And sometimes in my dreams is where you’ll find me,
And sometimes walking out along a wire,
My hopes and aspirations fall beneath me,
And the man from Louisiana says it’s fine.
Says it’s fine…

And I believe it’s time to seek forgiveness,
And I believe it’s time to make it right,
I say these words with hope that he will hear me,
Before I’m done he’s vanished out of sight.

And now I pray that he will never find you,
I trust that you will never be afraid,
We keep our hearts and minds close together,
Don’t listen to a word he has to say.

And sometimes in my dreams is where you’ll find me,
And sometimes walking out along a wire,
My hopes and aspirations fall beneath me,
And the man from Louisiana says it’s fine.
Says it’s fine…

Brand New Day

Well, this could mean just everything, it could mean you have it all,
It could mean that you found yourself, or that you really took a fall,
It could mean that it’s time to leave, or that it’s time to go,
It could mean that the greatest truth is the one you always know.
And I see that daylight’s coming and the darkness starts to fade,
I know that they made promises, but I’m scared I’ll be betrayed,
But with you right there beside me I know, I know for sure, that - it’s gonna be a brand new day.

This time we could make it, we could really have a prayer,
This time I could be someone, or you really couldn’t care,
This chance has come a second time, my mind is open wide,
I listen now to everything and let it all abide.
There are people who ask me questions, but I have nothing left to say.
An angel at my shoulder to help me find the way.
But with you right there beside me I swear on my life that –
it’s gonna be a brand new day.

With disappearing innocence I find my feet at last,
and now I see the truth of things, this all will come to pass.
The years will never hold me, but only let me know,
the future and the past are the country of the soul.
And all the lies they told us, well they just start to fade away,
And all the things they promised, the things we’d have without delay,
Yes, all these things are nothing, are just nothing at all –
when compared to a brand new day.

It’s time they knew,
The times I’ve tried,
But now it’s time to say goodbye

It’s time for me,
To find a way,
It’s time to make a brand new day.

Building Jails

It’s easy now to make believe that there’s always room to breathe, but life just seems to crowd you all the time.
And everywhere you try to go there’s always someone going slow, and telling you it’s gonna work out fine.

You fool yourself in thinking that, you know exactly where it’s at, and then you see you haven’t found the truth.
You see the years go slipping by, that attitude of do or die, is something you remember from your youth.

You tell yourself you have the time, you tell yourself it’s not a crime, to use your days whichever way you feel.
It’s easy come and easy go, it’s no big deal, it ain’t a show, it ain’t like anything is real.

But hours go by and days just fly, the blinking of a single eye, and soon it feels like there ain’t nothing left.
And then you see, so easily, all those years don’t come for free, and that you never had no time to rest.

And of all the things I can tell you, this one, just hear it well.
The only jail that can hold you is the one you build yourself.

The time has come to make a change, to disconnect and rearrange, to seize the chance to take another road.
For if you miss your second shot, and simply accept your lot, you’ll never have another chance to go.

And when it’s all been said and done, no matter if you’ve lost or won, the question you will ask yourself is plain.
Did I take each chance I saw, did I forever ask for more, or did I just accept whatever came?

And of all the things I can tell you, this one, just hear it well.
The only jail that can hold you is the one you build yourself.
