"People ask where the name came from.  It came from a walk I took in Manhattan some years ago from The White Horse Tavern to The Chelsea Hotel.  Dylan Thomas took that walk, having drunk nineteen shots of whisky.  He proudly announced this fact to the bellhop at The Chelsea, stating that it was probably some kind of record, and then he fell down dead.  In my mind he became the quintessential ‘whisky poet’.  A while later I went to see Kelly Joe Phelps and Corinne West, and they sang a song with the same name.  We were ‘The Renegades’, but we became ‘The Whiskey Poets’, as it seemed so much more fitting.  People have said we sound like this band and the other band.  I think we just sound like ourselves."
